Middlemarch
“Explain my preference! I never had a ‘preference’ for her, any more than I have a preference for breathing. No other woman exists by the side of her. I would rather touch her hand if it were dead, than I would touch any other woman’s living.”
Middlemarch by George Eliot (aka Marion Evans) looks at the lives and relationships of the people in Middlemarch. The book also looked at topics that affected the characters such as money, love, class, and politics. It took a little while to get into the novel. It was slow at first but once I got more invested in the relationships and characters, I loved every minute of the story!
I didn’t care for the chapters on the politics because they tend to be confusing and long winded. There are a lot of characters to keep track of that it can be confusing sometimes however. My favorite characters were Dorothea, Celia, Will Ladislaw, and Mary Garth!
I feel really proud to have read this huge novel and get back into reading classics. The ending was lovely, where the author tells us the future of each main character. She prefaces their futures by adding that she knows we want to know what happens to everyone, so she’ll give us exactly what we want-Eliot knows her audience!
